| Our
approach to coaching is co-active, which involves the 'active and
collaborative participation of both client and coach' in setting and
working towards clearly contracted objectives.
This recognises three critical factors:
|
- the paramount importance of the relationship
- confidential of course - in providing the conditions for
success;
- true learning and development is 'revelatory'
- ie the client has to 'own' the change;
- coaching is a future-oriented process which
needs clear objectives to be effective in a business
context.
|
Our role as coaches is primarily non-directive,
supporting and challenging the individual or team as they build
self-awareness, develop choices and identify actions for effective
change. There is much debate about 'directiveness' in coaching -
in contracting for our role in coaching relationships, there may
be times when we are invited to take a more directive approach when
appropriate, or to share skills, ideas and experience which may
be helpful to the client. We are, after all, coaches in a business
context and not counsellors. However, we will only take on this
more mentor-like role with specific permission from the client and
also if it seems the most appropriate way to make progress towards
the agreed objectives.
Our style is impartial and exploratory - through
listening, reflecting, challenging and questioning, together we
can explore what's important for the client, notice what works for
them and what gets in the way, what makes them feel more able to
cope with business and life.
